• Computer hardware

  Everything related to computer hardware - audio interfaces, MIDI interfaces and peripherals.

• DAW

  A DAW (digital audio workstation) is the heart of the modern studio.

  It's also basically a fancy name for either a software package like ProTools, Cubase, Logic, Ableton Live, Sonar, etc. or the total of the computer + software + audio interface. In this case, I'm using the term only for the software.

   

• MIDI

  MIDI - Musical Instrument Digital Interface. Its invention means we don't need a dozen arms to play complex arrangements by ourselves; and it does even more than that.

• Plugins

  Effects devices and sound generators in software form.

• Sampling

  A sampler is nothing more than a digital tape recorder. Once you realize this, a world will open for you.

• Sounddesign

  Systematically emulating or creating sounds, using synthesis theory.

• Synth1

  This great little software synthesizer is one of my favorite tools to teach subtractive synthesis with. Who said you needed something big and expensive?
